China to Ratify Kigali Amendment

China has announced that it will ratify the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, according to China's state-run press outlet Xinhua News Agency.
Chinese President Xi Jinping made the announcement in a virtual summit held on April 16 together with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
In addition, the U.S. and China issued a joint statement on April 17 stating that both countries will "each implement the phasedown of hydrofluorocarbon production and consumption reflected in the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol".
Fully implemented, the Kigali Amendment would avoid up to 0.4°C (0.7°F) increase in the global temperature by the end of the century, according to UN estimates.
The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol was enacted by 197 countries (plus the EU) in October 2016. It entered into force on January 1, 2019. Its goal is to achieve at least an 80% reduction in HFC consumption by 2047.
Cambodia was the latest country to ratify on April 8, 2021, becoming the 117th country, plus the European Union (EU), to ratify the global agreement to reduce HFC emissions.
