METRO Cash & Carry opens its first transcritical CO2 store in Moscow. Together with the companies Ingenium, Danfoss, Bitzer, Frigo-Consulting and Freor.

This is not the first time that a transcritical CO2 system has been installed in Russia. In 2016, Russian retailer Magnit opened a hypermarket in the suburban town of Voskresensk, using the CO2 booster system. It was produced locally by Nord-SM in collaboration with Danfoss and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), which did some preparatory work.

However, for the first time, the availability of a transcritical CO2 storage was achieved without the support of an international project. “Using this technology, METRO is one of the most progressive companies in the industry in Russia,” said Olaf Schulze, director of METRO AG for investments in energy management and technical solutions, told R744.com.

According to Schulze, METRO Russia has one subcritical CO2 storage, 25 subcritical CO2 facilities and one ammonia storage center.

The METRO installation was carried out by a local contractor, Ingenium, located in Rostov-on-Don (a city in southern Russia), who also provided a refrigeration unit with CO2 equipment, in a store with an area of 6,547 m2.

The CO2 transcritical system uses Danfoss controls, Bitzer compressors, Güntner gas coolers and Freor cooling furniture. “We started in Moscow because in other regions of Russia we lack the right contactors for transcritical systems,” explained Schulze.

Plans to launch more Moscow stores using CO2 transcritical technology. “Odintsovo will follow in August and Solntsevo in December, with transcritical CO2 technology,” he told R744.com.

The installation is another milestone in the F-Gas Exit METRO exit program. The wholesaler seeks to stop using F-Gas from its stores by 2030, replacing them with natural refrigerants. “Now more than 170 of our stores use natural refrigerants [worldwide],” said Schulze.
